The Snake Dancer, or Chusona, is often mistaken for a traditional Kachina. Rather he is a social figure that has become incredibly popular in Native American art and culture. The Hopi believe that the snake Dance ensures adequate spring water for themselves and rainwater for their crops. Snakes are seen as emisaries to the underworld, and it is believed they will deliver the message for the Hopi. The Snake Dance itself is one of the most popular events for non-Hopi people to witness. Because of this popularity Hopi and Non-Hopi carvers alike have enjoyed carving the figure for generations. This beautiful Snake Dancer was carved by Hopi Kachina artist R. Hinshaw in Colorado. Measurements: 1 1/2" tall. Signed by the artist.
