This incredible original painting by Cherokee descended artist Wanda Dillard titled "Unto These Hills" is acrylic on canvas. The canvas is a 2" thick gallery wrap canvas and the edges are painted. Capturing the very essence of Native American life and spirituality, Dillard's work is some of the most ambitions and emotionally charged we've seen. A poem, written by Dillard herself, accompanies this piece and describes the energy of the work:
Unto these hills we were born—
Nurtured by the sacred Red Clay
Of Mother Earth’s own breasts.
We learned the white man’s ways
In the mountains of the smoky blue mist.
We taught them to plant sweet corn.
We learned the importance of their written word
And created our own talking leaves.
We learned their laws and abided by them,
Even those that made no sense—
Making papers that say
We must own the land
On which the People walk.
Yet even then, our papers were no good
And they removed us from our land
To send us to a barren land where nothing grows.
On the way there were many lost.
And Mother Earth was covered with our tears.
There were many who went deep
Unto these hills
And hid away from the white man’s eyes.
There were many allowed to stay
With a white husband or wife.
But the deed was done
And the People were forever divided—
Those in the east, and those in the west.
Families were broken, never to be reunited.
Still, wherever we are, we are Cherokee.
Wherever we are, our hearts long for home.
Wherever we are, we belong
Unto these hills…
