The burning of herbs for ceremonial and cleansing purposes is a longheld traditional among almost all ancient cultures around the world. The methods and philosophies about it are as varied as the cultures themselves. What is written here should be no means be taken as an end-all-be-all guide, but rather a general introduction to this sacred process. In the end, the only "wrong way" to smudge is to not carry into the process a calm heart and open mind.
Sage is used for purifying and cleansing an environment. It is an ancient ritual that continues to be used in our world today.
Sage can be burned in an abalone shell in the traditional manner, which involves breaking up the sage into small pieces and placing them in the shell. Next use a match or lighter to fire the sage; and just like a campfire you would blow on the sage embers to start it to smoke. Then either with a prayer feather or your hand “fan” the smoke in the desired direction. Native belief is while the smoke is rising your prayers are sent to the Creator for blessings.
A sage wand can be burned just as if you were lighting a cigar. Here you would blow on the embers and wave the wand as you pray.
The sage can also be placed in the shell just to make the room smell good. When sitting the sage also draws negative energy from the air. Occasionally, pinch the sage between your thumb & index finger to “release the oils” of the sage. You will smell a distinct odor from the sage when you do this.
Sage is used by medicine men at the beginning of a ceremony to cleanse & purify your energy field. This clears your thoughts in preparation for the ceremony.
Sage can also be carried in a Medicine Pouch, which you wear around the neck. It can be sprinkled around the perimeter of your home for protection.
